LIBYA

Libya is a country immediately outside the EU borders, and for many refugees, including URMs, it is the last country before they (try to) enter the EU. Most refugees arriving in Libya have already gone through a long journey, and possibly through many harsh and traumatizing experiences. Since for most refugees, entering the EU is their main goal, we hypothesized that once they have attained this goal, their views on their past experiences might change, rendering it necessary to question their experiences before they reach the EU. Further, there have been several accounts of abuses of transiting migrants by border authorities in Libya, and the refugee reception conditions are known to be very precarious and harsh (Amnesty International, 2015).  The research sites in Libya were three detention centres near Tripoli.
